Ecological impact of the dingo after its arrival in Mainland Australia The thylacine is likely to have become near-extinct in mainland Australia about 2, years ago, and possibly earlier in New Guinea. Doubts exist over the impact of the dingo since the two species would not have been in direct competition with one another as the dingo hunts primarily during the day , whereas it is thought that the thylacine hunted mostly at night. In addition, the thylacine had a more powerful build, which would have given it an advantage in one-on-one encounters. The thylacine was also much less versatile in diet than the omnivorous dingo. The adoption of the dingo as a hunting companion by the indigenous peoples would have put the thylacine under increased pressure. The results show that the humans were obviously one of the major factors in the extinction of many species in Australia. The results indicated that the last of the thylacines in Australia, on top of the threats from dingoes, had limited genetic diversity, due to their complete geographic isolation from mainland Australia. The paper documented the obviously competitive relationship between the dingo, the thylacine and the Tasmanian devil, and noted that the dingo may have actually fed on the native hen. Yet, the paper concludes, people ignore the emergence of humans on the continent among all of this. In the end, the competitiveness of the dingo and thylacine populations led to the extinctions of the thylacine, but the arrival of the humans only further exacerbated this.

And what about the dried doum-palm fruit, which has been giving off a worrisome fungusy scent ever since it was dropped in a brandy snifter of hot water and sampled as a tea? At last, Patrick McGovern, a year-old archaeologist, wanders into the little pub, an oddity among the hip young brewers in their sweat shirts and flannel. Proper to the point of primness, the University of Pennsylvania adjunct professor sports a crisp polo shirt, pressed khakis and well-tended loafers; his wire spectacles peek out from a blizzard of white hair and beard.
But Calagione, grinning broadly, greets the dignified visitor like a treasured drinking buddy. Which, in a sense, he is. The truest alcohol enthusiasts will try almost anything to conjure the libations of old. Other guidelines came from the even more ancient Wadi Kubbaniya, an 18, year-old site in Upper Egypt where starch-dusted stones, probably used for grinding sorghum or bulrush, were found with the remains of doum-palm fruit and chamomile.
The brewers also went so far as to harvest a local yeast, which might be descended from ancient varieties many commercial beers are made with manufactured cultures. They left sugar-filled petri dishes out overnight at a remote Egyptian date farm, to capture wild airborne yeast cells, then mailed the samples to a Belgian lab, where the organisms were isolated and grown in large quantities.

The name of several distinguished persons mentioned in the Old Testament Kings, Par. His mother was Maacha, daughter of Tholmai, King of Gessur. The sacred writer who sketches for us the career of Absalom 2 Samuel 13 – 18 lays stress upon the faultless beauty of the youth’s appearance, and mentions in particular the luxurious wealth of his hair, which, when shorn, weighed over ten ounces.
The significance of this latter note becomes apparent when we remember the important part which the culture of the hair played in the devotions of the Eastern people note even at this day the ceremonial prayers of the Dervishes. As shaving the head was a sign of mourning, so offering a comely growth of hair to the priest was a token of personal sacrifice akin to the annual offering of the first fruits in the sanctuary.
Probably the chronicler had also in mind that it was this gift of nature which became the occasion of Absalom’s fatal death. To a pleasing exterior the youth Absalom joined a temperament which, whilst fond of display, was nevertheless reserved, bold, and thoughtful. These qualifications were calculated to nourish a natural desire to be one day the representative of that magnificent power created by his father, from the prospective enjoyment of which his minority of birth alone seemed to debar him.
Despite his ambition, there appears to have been in the youth that generous instinct of honour which inspires noble impulses where these do not clash with the more inviting prospects of self-interest. Under such circumstances it is not strange that Absalom, idolized by those around him, whilst his natural sense of gratitude and filial duty became gradually dulled, was led to cultivate that species of egotism which grows cruel in proportion as it counts upon the blind affection of its friends.
There were other causes which alienated Absalom from his father. David’s eldest son, Amnon, born of a Jezrahelite mother, and prospective heir to the throne by reason of his seniority, had conceived a violent passion for Thamar, Absalom’s beautiful sister.
An approximate time-scale of events in the Geological history of Tasmania. Axis scale is in millions of years ago. After this there are many signs of glaciation from the Cryogenian , as well as the global warming that occurred at the start of the Ediacaran period. An orogeny folded the older Precambrian rocks. In the Cambrian time the Tyennan block forming the south west and central Tasmania, was pushed up and slightly over the land of north west Tasmania , the Tyennan Orogeny.
Biogeography deals with the geographical distribution of plants and animals and the processes that result in such distributions. The process of continental drift has played a major role in determining the global distribution of plants and animals. Pangean organisms The most ancient animals in Tasmania have an ancestry that extend back to a time when the Earth’s continents were all joined as single landmass known as Pangea which existed beyond million years ago. Pangea split from east to west into Laurasia North America and Eurasia and Gondwana, the two remaining connected at Gibraltar with the Tethys Sea separating them.
The presence of closely related organisms in both the northern and southern hemispheres cannot be accounted for by migration. Some species which have distributions indicative of an ancient origin dating back to the existence of Pangea include: Peripatus, a member of the phylum Onycophora, which comprises only about species. Tasmania is the world centre of diversity for this ancient phylum. The hairy cicada, a soundless and ancient species of cicada.
The hairy cicadas belong to the primitive cicada family Tettigarctidae, which consists of only two species. The breakup of Gondwana Africa and India where the first to break away from Gondwana some million years ago. Consequently, the present flora of Africa and India have fewer remnants of the Gondwanan flora than those continents that remained connected for a longer period – South America and Australia. Nonetheless, there are some similarities among the older plant families such as the Proteacae.

The uncanny threshold is a concept derived from my personal experience of contemporary Australian architecture in the form of Lovett Bay House, the private home of architects Richard Leplastrier and Karen Lambert in New South Wales. This research argues that Lovett Bay House challenges Malpas’s view that the threshold is something that needs to be crossed, as a zone of transition, in order to be a threshold. At Lovett Bay House, the absence of a conventional door, and the effective removal of the front wall, shifts the concept of the threshold as space of transition from inside to outside or vice versa to the threshold as a zone of habitation — a space in which one dwells.
Within the zone of habitation it is argued that everyday experiences are made extraordinary through the simultaneous and overlapping space of the extended entranceway; the inside and outside experienced as one, and, what I have termed, the uncanny threshold. It is the aim of this research to explore the physical entity and felt experience of the uncanny threshold through the pictorial space of painting.
In the first instance, a genealogy of the threshold is developed, drawing on the sublime as a device in painting.
